From the FT:
The Philippines’ government on Monday said it was banning its seafarers from sailing through the pirate-infested waters off Somalia, threatening a serious disruption of world shipping.
The Philippines is the world’s largest supplier of maritime labour, providing at least 10 per cent of the world’s 1.5m ocean-going seafarers.
“If the Philippines were to suspend the sending of, or limit the travel of, seafarers to the pirate area, that would definitely disrupt world shipping,” he said.
Ahhh… And I thought our relevance in the global labor market stopped with providing nurses.
